You are the happy owner of a small dog, who fills you with happiness. But, despite all the love you give him, your companion does not stop barking, and his inopportune vocalizations are not to the taste of everyone in the neighborhood… This problem is unfortunately common, especially with small dogs. But rest assured, there are effective and inexpensive solutions to overcome this inconvenience and regain harmonious relations with your four-legged friend!
What is an anti-bark collar and how is it used?
The basic principle common to all anti-bark collars is the detection of the vibration of the vocal cords by sensors located on the collar and placed under the neck of your dog. These sensors cause an instantaneous sanction, different according to the models and whose intensity you can adjust. The idea is to associate the command “No!” to the punishment sent by the collar. Your dog will quickly understand that the two things are linked, and you will be able to leave the collar on him even when you are not there. The last thing to specify is that this is a training accessory only suitable for puppies over 6 months old.
What are the different types of collars?
Manufacturers currently offer four different types of anti-bark collars for small dogs. The best known is the electric anti-bark collar, but you can also find spray, ultrasonic or vibration models. The most important thing is to know your pet well, in order to choose the mode of action adapted to its age, weight and temperament. The electric or static shock anti-bark collar is suitable for dogs weighing at least 3 kg. It sends light electric shocks, unpleasant but without danger for the animal. However, some sensitive or fearful individuals will not tolerate it and will develop anxiety behaviors, even stress diarrhea; you must then turn to other possibilities.
The sanction emitted by the spray collar consists in sending an odorless jet, scented with citronella or mint, directly towards the dog’s nose. This one, very sensitive to this place and having an infinitely more developed sense of smell than ours, will appreciate only moderately this jet in its nostrils! This model gives good results on sensitive animals, and the existence of different “perfumes” allows to avoid habituation.
The vibration collar, quite similar to the electric model, corrects the animal by shaking.
Finally, the ultrasonic collar emits unpleasant ultrasounds at each barking. Once again, this is a fairly gentle model, but the results are not certain. However, it can be useful for very small dogs. Also, some models combine the two corrections.
How to adjust an anti-bark collar for small dogs ?
As we explained above, the effectiveness of the system relies on the sensors that perceive the vibrations of the dog’s vocal cords. Therefore, if your dog has a long or very thick coat, it may be necessary to cut or even shear this area to ensure good contact with the skin. On the other hand, a collar that is too tight can cause friction wounds in this area. Be very careful when choosing the model, which must be the right size, and watch the skin under the sensors. Your pet should not wear its anti-bark collar permanently either: it is not a tethering or walking collar!
In conclusion, the anti-bark collar is an accessory that, when used intelligently, can help you find harmony with your pet… and your neighbors!
